2014 All Star Game Scorecards

Mo and the All Star Game

Like many millions of Yankee fans across the country, I watched last nights Mid Summer Classic with a sense of Joy and Sadness. Joy at seeing the best that our favorite sport has to offer on display in what was a beautiful and well presented show. Sadness because we knew that this would be the last time we would see the games greatest Closer of all time in action in an All Star Setting. Mo and the All Star Game were made for each other. Like Ruth, Mantle, Williams, Dimaggio, Aaron, Jackson who came before him, it would be a shock not to see Rivera at this celebration of greatness and alas, after 2013 we will not.

Oh I’m sure he’ll be there in some form of ambassador’s position. Sitting there in the stands, smiling benevolently upon All Stars new and old but it won’t be the same as knowing the last No. 42 will be jogging out of the pen, bowing in front of his opponent in the batting box and unleashing a cutter that strikes true to the plate. Mo has left us with many memories, and will still make many more before the end of 2013 but last night left one different to all the others that have come before. From all those joyous times we’ve seen him get a batter to swing at Strike 3, to pop out into the IF or hit a lazy fly ball to a Outfielder then lead to a celebration, whether it be Regular or Postseason, to those not so happy times where the man shows he is a man after all and, on very rare occasions can give up a lead, nothing created more mixed emotions then Rivera’s appearance last night.

It started with the familiar jog to the mound. FOX delighting us with the image Yankee fans know so well (and opponent fans still dread.) The camera looking out from the bullpen door as No. 42 jogs assuredly towards the mound. It’s an image as indelible as Ruth leaning on the bat, or Gehrig at the Mic. It’s the Pinstripes, its’ the history, it’s New York, it’s winning. it may have been Citi Field in the background but it still felt right. Then Mo basked in the 2 minute standing O the crowd of fans of mixed allegiances gave him. Standing on the field alone as players in both dugouts applauded him, emotion swelling visibly on his face the world knew, if it did not know all along, that the 2013 All Star Game belonged to him. 16 pitches later and the man walked off to more applause, the last time he will ever take the mound in anger at an All Star Game.

So why the mixed emotions? Well the dominant emotion was joy, joy at seeing him, joy at seeing him recognized by all of baseball, joy at seeing him realize how much everyone loves him. Then, under this was a great deal of sadness. I won’t deny I shed tears, I shed tears because Mo looked like he was on the verge of shedding them himself, but also because this one man has given me so many happy memories, both by watching in the stands or through the TV Screen and that after this year, those memories will have to suffice.

I imagine this is how people felt knowing Dimaggio was retiring, Williams, Mantle, Kofax… That never again will we see them live on the mound in a game, doing what they do, how we know they do. Their exploits living on in game footage and memory alone.

We witnessed history last night folks. History that I truly wish wouldn’t end.
